Décor

One of the marvelous qualities of Jim Costello’s work is that it can be hung in environments of any period of style and décor. The painting, Smoke Rises Over Turkey Run, is shown here in the gallery of Vilnis and Company Antiques, Strasburg, Virginia, which specializes in furniture and accessories of the 18th and 19th centuries. In this context Jim’s painting seems to echo the colors and gestures found in English Romanticist Landscape painting, such as that of J.M.W. Turner.

The work of American Abstract Expressionists such as Arthur Dove, and the early modernist paintings of Marc Chagall are evoked in Red Fan. This painting hangs on the wall of the contemporary, light-filled home of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Ferrari of White Post, Virginia, where its brilliant colors and fluid lines are a perfect counterpoint to the crisp lines and muted pallet of the home’s décor.
